Online Therapy for Eating Disorders, Body Image & Self-Worth

When Food and Your Body Take Up Too Much Space

You may spend more time than you want thinking about food, your body, your weight, what you ate, what you should eat, or how you look.

Maybe you criticize yourself, compare constantly, restrict, overeat, avoid certain foods, disconnect from your body, or promise yourself that tomorrow you will finally have more control.

And underneath it all, your sense of worth may begin to feel tied to how well you are managing your body.

Disordered Eating, Restriction & Bingeing

Food struggles do not always look the same.

You may experience restriction, binge eating, emotional eating, rigid food rules, fear around certain foods, cycles of control and loss of control, or feeling disconnected from hunger and fullness.

The work goes beyond changing the behaviour. We look at what happens before it, what the behaviour provides in that moment, and what your system may actually be needing.

Body Image, Shame & Self-Worth

Sometimes the struggle is less about food and more about what your body has come to represent.

You may believe you will finally feel confident, attractive, successful, lovable, or enough when your body changes.

Therapy creates space to explore where those beliefs came from and begin separating your worth from your appearance, weight, productivity, or ability to meet impossible standards.

Perfectionism, Control & the Inner Critic

For many clients, food and body concerns exist alongside perfectionism, self-criticism, people pleasing, anxiety, or a strong need to stay in control.

The inner critic may believe that pressure is what keeps you disciplined, accepted, successful, or safe.

Rather than trying to silence it, we work to understand why it developed and what might become possible if it no longer had to run everything.

IFS Therapy for Eating Disorders & Body Image

IFS allows us to work with the different parts involved in your relationship with food and your body.

We may get to know parts that:

  • Restrict or control

  • Binge or seek comfort through food

  • Criticize your appearance

  • Compare you to others

  • Avoid mirrors, photographs, or certain situations

  • Fear weight or body changes

  • Push toward perfection

  • Carry shame

  • Disconnect from your body

  • Believe your worth depends on how you look

The question becomes less ....How do I make this stop? and more:

What is this part trying to protect?
What does it believe would happen if it stopped?
What is underneath the need to control?

Is This Therapy Right for You?

This work may resonate if food and body thoughts take up too much mental space, you struggle with body dissatisfaction, restriction, bingeing, perfectionism, shame, self-criticism, or your sense of worth feels closely connected to your appearance.

The goal is not another set of rules.

It is developing a different relationship with your body, food, your parts, and ultimately yourself.
